Are you the type of person who seriously considers it a personal challenge to find the best deal on something? Do you go to flea markets and garage sales, earnestly looking for the next amazing deal that you may end up bragging about for years to come? Did you used to keep your cell phone on constantly, while subtly talking out loud to your at home contact about the merchandise on offer… while the person at home checked its likely resale price on eBay? If you are a professional deal hunter, than the Droid vs iPhone “phone war” is going to make you richer than a weapons manufacturer could get during World War III.

There are plenty of search engines out there. But while search engines are very convenient software, the idea that any search you go through would need you to be physically sitting at a computer takes away a broad stroke of the usefulness those search engines can bring to bear. While you could bring a laptop and an air card to your “hunting ground,” you might alert the other hunters if you start searching online, then suddenly seem especially interested in a particular item on offer. You have to put forward a little bit of subtlety, or you might suddenly find yourself in a pool full of sharks.

The search engines can help you suss out just about anything you might need to know about an item, whether your intention is to resell it, keep it as a collectible, or simply use it for the betterment of your own life. You can find out the subtle differences between one style of antique and a cheap knockoff they still make in China, just by doing a search on your phone. You can figure out what kind of price would yield what kind of profit, without having to go anywhere or blow your cover.

Sometimes it seems like there is only one search engine in the world. It’s easy for people to get caught up in the craze of the latest thing but the fact of the matter is that a search engine isn’t just relegated to one site. As a matter of fact, there are literally hundreds of search engines across the World Wide Web aimed at finding you the content you are looking for. Whether it be looking for coupon codes on a site like Offers.com or statistics on Scottie Pippen, there is many different ways to find the information you want. But why try more than one search engine? The answer is simply the choices.

Search engines are usually formed by the most hits per site. So if you typed “football” into a search engine, it is going to come up with the website that gets the most traffic that has the keyword “football” in it. You would probably see that the top site is the NFL.com website. While this will probably be the number one search on any search engine, the problem is that sometimes you are not looking for the NFL but actually how to make your own football or how a football is made.

The more obscure your topic is the more reason to try various search engines for your answer. Each search engine will have their own information based on what their users have looked for, so the results you get from Google will be different from Yahoo. So just because you can use just one search engine doesn’t mean you should. Each topic is best suited for a different search engine, not to mention that the quality of information you receive can be different from site to site. Make sure you take full advantage of all the search engines out there.

Search Engine and Internet Marketing for Business Owners

Every business needs to market their products or services to potential customers, finding new customers to make up for regular attrition and to keep up with the growing cost of goods. Enough new customers each year equals a stable business. Therefore, marketing is key, both for online and offline businesses.

One type of internet or web marketing is called search engine marketing (SEM). This type of marketing is used to promote a businesses website through search engine optimization: increasing the ranking in search engine result pages. What does this mean for you, the business owner? Well, the sooner your website shows up in the list of results (based on a keyword search by a web user), the more likely the web user is to visit your site, and the more visitors overall you can expect to receive. And, with so many sites selling the exact same thing, getting people to your site is half the battle (the other half is having a professional, polished website with a call to action, such as purchasing a product or service).

There are two types of search engine optimization: “natural” or “organic” (which is unpaid), and paid listings. If your budget allows for paid search engine advertising (pay-per-click or set programs), this could certainly be an option, one that has been lucrative for many businesses. However, like many small businesses with limited budgets, you might first want to try to improve your search engine rankings organically ¦meaning without having to pay for it.

Cross Linking – cross linking is one way to increase the prominence of your website’s search engine results. This is done in several ways: by setting hyperlinks between pages of your website; by including content in your website that incorporates frequently searched key words or phrases; and by adding keywords to the meta data (HTML) of your webpages.

There are other ways to increase your search engine visibility on the web, and therefore increase the traffic your website receives. In the following articles we will explore them. Stay tuned to learn more!

Using Content to Increase Search Engine Rankings

It used to be that focusing on keywords, backlinks, and submitting your site to search engines were the key components of search engine optimization strategy in order to increase traffic to your website. However, times have changed. Search engines, (most notably Google), are now discarding poor quality sites that do not provide good content. While keywords are still one element that affect search engine results, you also need to provide valuable information to web users.

Quality Content Sells

The reason quality content is so crucial is because the primary reason web users go online is to search for (and find) information that will answer their questions, improve the quality of their life, help them find products to buy, explain how to use products, provide customer feedback, etc. Therefore, if you want potential customers to locate your website, find value in it, and give you their business, you must be willing to provide exceptional content that satisfies this primary need. For this reason, many companies are now utilizing professional writers to create informative, helpful, insightful content for their sites.

Spend Money on Content, Not Appearance or Design

This means that it matters more what your website has to SAY rather than how it LOOKS – some of the tackiest sites on the web have lots of traffic. It’s all about the content offerings. Whether you are selling products, services or information, it is all about what people can learn from your site. And once they feel that your site is a valuable resource, your creditability automatically increases and so does the potential that they will give you their business.

The next time you consider spicing up your website, here’s a suggestion: instead of looking for a snazzy web designer to improve the appearance of your website, instead consider replacing or adding compelling copy to your site. Whether you do it yourself or hire someone to write content, based on the direction the web is moving and what users want, content could very well be a better use of your money.

Web traffic is one important factor that dictates how much product your business can sell online. And search engine ranking greatly affects the amount of traffic your site receives. The better the optimization, the better your ranking. What are the best ways to optimize your website so that search engines give it a higher visibility ranking?

First, some background. The four primary search engines are Yahoo, Google, Bing, and Ask. The other search sites utilize results taken from one or all of these four, so making sure your URL appears on these four is imperative. Unfortunately, no one is able to guarantee a top spot on these search engines. Companies that promise the guarantee of search engine results are usually engaging in techniques that are considered black (or black hat) versus white hat (legitimate) techniques. Beware of such promises and blacklisted techniques, which could cost more than its worth in terms of credibility.

You can always pay for traffic but your focus should be on getting free traffic from search engines, which means doing the following:
1. Ensure your website is clear and unambiguous when it comes to stating its purpose – this means having keyword rich content and titles. The more keyword-rich content you have within the pages of your site, the greater number of entry points your site will have. Spend some time optimizing your site with the right keywords. To research keywords, the following tools will be helpful: Google’s free Adwords tool; Wordtracker, which has a free and a paid version; Keyword Elite; and Nichebot, which is powerful but not free. Incorporate keywords that people are actually searching for within the pages of your site.
2. Get other sites to link to your website by creating more of a web presence. Do this by blogging, commenting on others’ blogs, having Twitter, Facebook, and My Space accounts that link to your site, writing press releases, article marketing (such as EZine), forum comments, creating a Squidoo lens, or posting You Tube videos.

Both components are equally important when it comes to increasing your site’s visibility on the web.

a chart to describe the search engine market

The reason it is important to incorporate website optimization strategies into your overall marketing approach is to improve your ranking when it comes to search engine results. This means that when people are searching for products or services you offer, your website will be listed sooner and more predominantly than your competitors – which equals more traffic to your site, potentially higher sales, greater revenue and profit, you get the picture. Most web users never go beyond the initial results page (and certainly not beyond page three of results), which means that if your site isn’t ranked high, chances are your site will go unseen – and you’ll miss out on potential customers.

The first and easiest option in the quest for top rankings is to pay for it. Of course, this is the most expensive route to take (and may or may not provide return on investment). Google, Yahoo!, and other search engines offer pay-per-click and other marketing programs.

Your other option, and certainly the more cost effective way, is to optimize your website yourself. It will require dedication, meaning you’ll always be looking for ways to update and improve your site.
1. Take a look at your website, then eliminate any clutter, long blocks of unbroken text, and ambiguous messaging.
2. Provide an “opt-in” box on each page of your site to collect visitor’s email addresses. This will allow you to stay in touch with potential customers. Make sure you offer a reason they would want to provide this information (specials, promotions, updates, information, etc.).
3. Regularly update your site with informative bulletins, product information, special offers, feature articles, etc. In other words, give web users a reason to visit and return to your site.
4. Keywords are extremely important when it comes to search engine optimization. Find out what keywords are most commonly used for searches, and incorporate these words into the content of your website in appropriate and contextual places. Again, make sure the information is helpful and informative rather than being present simply for SEO reasons. You want people to visit your site and stick around.

The Downfall of iWeb and SEO

Search engine optimization is the best way to leverage online marketing. If you are just starting out building a website, now is the time to incorporate SEO strategies that will give you the most bang for your buck. That being said, if you already have a website, is it worth redoing it strictly to achieve better rankings with search engines? That depends on your marketing objectives and how serious you are about your business.

Say, for instance, that your website was built using Apple’s iWeb application, which is an extremely easy way to create a website (and one that comes free with a Mac). Even beginners can easily put together a site using this incredibly user-friendly software. The problem with iWeb is that it lacks meta tags and unique meta descriptions and meta keyword tags for each page. As well, much of the text within the pages of your site will not be indexable by search engines because they are thought to be graphics rather than content (and as we know, content is king when it comes to search engine optimization strategies). There are other issues with iWeb – it gets pretty technical. Not that your site cannot become popular on its own – and that will make it well ranked (the reverse of SEO). If you have an outstanding website with a nice look and feel that is full of helpful, interesting content, it could take off without the use of search engine rankings.

Sufficed to say that iWeb isn’t the best choice for businesses that are serious about online marketing. On the other hand, it is perfect for beginners who want to easily create a website but who are not trying to market themselves online. You can hand out business card with your site’s URL, and visitors will see a nice site (one that hopefully contains plenty of valuable, well written content), and that is enough. Objective met.

So again, it all depends on what you are trying to accomplish. To be sure, iWeb has its place – it’s just not right for everyone.

In the age of technology, marketing has also shifted into the high tech arena. One way to reach your customers is by utilizing email blasts – mass emails that go out to your database of people. Use email blasts as part of your marketing efforts or within a larger campaign.

Email blasts utilize HTML to create a colorful, graphical email with sections and borders – something eye catching and interesting. An email blast can include any type of information you wish to share and should read like an electronic newsletter, containing valuable pieces of information such as articles, recipes, tips, best practices, fun facts, ‘what’s new’ and helpful hints. It could discuss upcoming events, promotions, or awareness raising. An email blast is a great opportunity to share specials, discounts, features, or sales.

The easiest way to create a professional email blast is to utilize one of the many service providers available, such as Mail Chimp or Constant Contact – an online search will yield the options. Such services will help you with pre-designed designs and templates, as well as list management and tracking. For as low as $15 per month, you can establish more brand recognition while communicating with hundreds of potential buyers.

When writing an email blast, it is important to give it serious consideration and thought. After all, this communication will be representative of you. Consider the following:
1. When you create an email blast, always keep in mind your audience to ensure the content is relevant and appropriate.
2. Come up with a compelling and catchy (yet forthright) subject line that will result in your reader opening the email – rather than sending it to the delete folder before it is ever read. The subject line will often determine the email’s fate.
3. Know your offering well enough to promote your service or product authoritatively and genuinely.
4. Ensure the formatting of the email blast is professional, clean, and readable, with bold headings, subheadings, and bulleted points.

Ongoing communication is key when it comes to marketing. If done right, email blasts can be extremely effective in promoting your business.
